Biological Effects

Alcohol can affect your body in many different ways, excessive alcohol consumption can cause things such as, higher risk of stroke or heart attack, it can also cause liver damage and shorten your lifespan. Alcohol abuse can also result in Korsakoff syndrome, a chronic memory disorder.  Alcohol has a much higher risk of causing health problems when it becomes addictive which is very common in society. In 2018 19.1% of Canadians (Roughly 5.9 million people) reported alcohol consumption which classified them as heavy drinkers. Alcohol abusers are at high risk of seizures during withdrawal. These seizures often know to cause injuries due to falling and convulsing.

Mental Effects from Alcoholism

Alcohol can definitely take a toll on your mental health. Many Canadians use alcohol to cope with stress which can lead to addiction. This reliance on alcohol to cope with stress is especially noticeable during the PAWS (Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome) when alcohol abusers try to face stress without the use of alcohol. During PAWS alcohol abusers often feel overwhelmed by daily life. Alcohol is in the depressant drug category and can cause acute anxiety and depression when alcohol is discontinued. These issues coupled with the social, family and emotional turmoil often associated with alcohol abuse means stabilization and recovery take much longer than a few weeks.

Spiritual Effects?

Alcohol is a depressant drug and has meant that during withdrawal, people who use high amounts of alcohol become highly agitated and anxious. This makes it difficult to achieve a sense of calm, safety and direction that is needed to alter their drinking habit. Manifestations of alcohol abuse in a person’s life are often not attending work, not being present in family life, isolation and poor money management. All of these complex interactions can result in a cycle of depression, anxiety and dependence that can cause hopelessness and dereliction. The onset of alcoholism is often slow, taking place over a number of years during which the alcoholic seemed to drink normally. Once the loss of control happens, alcoholics can be very defiant and resistant to treatment because they believe they can drink normally each episode.

Alcohol detox should be supervised by medical professionals as it can result in major health complications such as seizures, hallucinations and of course, relapse. Alcohol abusers are at most risk of seizures and hallucinations after 5 days of alcohol withdrawal. If alone during a seizure or without proper medication from a physician, seizures can be fatal. Proper medication management is important when alcohol detox is taking place. Things to look out for when it comes to an individual detoxing off alcohol is, checking blood pressure regularly, checking pulse/heart-rate regularly and basic health checks (headaches, vomiting, diarrhoea)
